Market Forecast: My Gut is a Traitor and Europe is Dragging Me Down

Written by: George from The Smartin Team

I woke up at 4:00 AM because a pigeon was looking at me through the window with judgmental eyes, and then I saw it: the Euro Stoxx 50 is down -1.15%. That’s it. That’s the sign. The continent of baguettes and high-speed rail is telling me that my week is over before I’ve even put on my morning slippers.

Every fiber of my being is screaming at me to sell everything. I want to liquidate. I want to go all-cash and live in a hollowed-out tree in Central Park. But I’ve learned something. My instincts are the Benedict Arnold of internal organs. Every time my heart says “run,” the market says “buy the dip.” So, today, I am performing a total lifestyle inversion. I am doing the Opposite.

The Tech Massacre and My Fragile Ego

Look at last week. The QQQ dropped -4.86%. That’s not a “pullback.” That’s a structural collapse of my self-esteem. Tech investors are walking around like they just saw a ghost, but the VIX—the so-called “fear gauge”—actually dropped -7.05% to 18.58.

Eighteen point five eight! How is anyone calm? How is there less fear? I have enough fear to power a small metropolitan area, and the market is sitting there acting like it’s at a day spa. Peter Lynch always talked about how you should know what you own, and right now, I know I own a portfolio that looks like a crime scene.

Finding the “Opposite” Winners

Last week, while I was busy panicking, CHWY was up +7.5%. Dog food! People are buying kibble while I’m watching my net worth evaporate like steam off a hot pastrami. Even SNDL was up +6.8%. It’s a world where snacks and weed are the only things keeping us afloat.

My gut tells me that because the SPY was down -1.15% last week, I should be looking for a bunker. But the “Opposite George” knows better. Instead of chasing the latest AI hype that just burned me for nearly five percent, I should be looking for growth at a reasonable price stocks. It’s a revolutionary concept: buying things that actually make money and don’t have a P/E ratio that looks like a phone number.

The Monday Verdict

We’re an hour from the open, and I’m standing here with my hands trembling, staring at a screen that’s telling me Europe is having a bad time. My instinct is to cancel my cable, sell my shoes, and move to a jurisdiction with no extradition treaty.

So, what am I going to do? I’m going to stay. I’m going to look at the debt levels. I’m going to find the companies with actual cash flow. If the world is ending at a -1.15% clip in Europe, I’m going to be the guy buying the sensible, boring companies while everyone else is fighting over the last scraps of overvalued tech.

I’m going to be calm. I’m going to be rational. I’m going to be everything I’m not. And if that pigeon is still there when I get home, I’m buying the building and evicting him.

Before you let your own lying gut talk you into a bad trade, run the ticker through this 15-second reality check and see if the math actually backs up your panic.
